I recently worked with a neighbourhood management organisation in Berlin’s Neukölln district to create a folding map of their area to be given out to residents. The brief was to create a folding paper map handout, with a map illustration on one side and information on local events and support services on the opposite side.

The map is hand drawn from a bird’s eye perspective. It features the local schools, kindergartens, community centres and local businesses, with the streets full of cars and people. It was important to capture the spirit of the neighbourhood, which I did by filling the map with small moments, such as a large group of people protesting the rising rents in the area, floats and dancers taking part in the Carnival of Cultures, a Turkish wedding parade and many people, vehicles and life filling the streets.
